Problem-Solving:

All Your Eggs in One Basket, Plus One

 

Today's Snack: Hard-boiled eggs, of course! Enjoy with a glass of milk or juice, eggs-actly what you need to make a tasty snack.

Supplies:

Easter basket | large supply of plastic eggs | paper | pencil

 

 

You may want to actually put eggs into the basket as you work out this puzzle. Or some students might prefer to completely work it out on paper. Of course, once you discover the answer, you can put the eggs in and try it out! Don't peek, but the answer is below.

 

Here is the puzzle:

 

A certain quantity of eggs are in a basket. Whether the eggs in the basket are counted by 2's, 3's, or 5's, there is always one egg left over, each time. What is the smallest number of eggs that could be in the basket?

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

(Answer: 2 x 3 x 5 + 30, plus 1 = 31)
