Geometry:
Geometric Art
Today's
Snack: Cut
raw veggies into geometric shapes - circles, ovals, squares, rectangles,
triangles, parallelograms, etc. - and wash down with a tall CYLINDER (there's
another geometric shape) of fruit juice!

Supplies:
Compass | extra pencil | ruler |
plain white paper | colored pencils or thin markers
Load a pencil into your compass.
Open your compass to about 3½ inches, or 9 centimeters. With the ruler, find
the center of your paper from top to bottom, and from side to side.
Place the sharp part of the compass there, and
rotate the drawing point all the way around, lightly drawing a circle.
With the extra pencil, lightly mark
a point and label it "A" on the top of your circle.
Without changing the compass settings, place the
compass point on point A, and revolve the compass so that the pencil point is
also on the curve of the circle to the right. Mark that point "B."
Continue around the circle using the compass to
measure points "C," "D," "E" and "F." Your circle should now be divided into
six equal parts. Each of the six points is the same distance from the ones next
to it, as it is from the center point.
Now use your ruler to copy the basic pattern, below.
Draw lightly! Then make a list and count all the geometric shapes you see
within that circle: triangles, quadrilaterals, parallelograms, diamonds, etc.
When you're finished, you can either color this
geometric shape, or erase part of it and redraw lines to produce one of the
three alternative patterns below it. You can also have fun on another sheet of
paper making a geometric artwork using only circles of different sizes with
your compass.
