K-2 Math:

Laundry Hoops

Today's Snack: You can fill a laundry basket with clothes, but it's more fun to fill a baked potato with yummy toppings. First, scrub a potato, then pierce it with a fork several times. Put it on a paper towel in the microwave. Microwave on "high" for 10 minutes. Use an oven mitt to take it out. Let stand for five minutes to cool off a little. Put it on a plate and cut in half. Sprinkle with shredded cheese, sour cream, plain yogurt, chopped chives, bacon bits or whatever else sounds good! Be sure to eat the potato skins - lots of nutrients!

Supplies:

Laundry basket | one or more balls | masking tape

Here's a great way to practice counting by 2's, 5's and 10's. This is fun to play with a partner or in a small group. Flip a coin or draw straws to decide who goes first, second, etc.

  1. First, tape a line behind which each player should stand and place the laundry basket a distance away that is far enough to be challenging but close enough to allow the students to score often.

  1. Decide on the number of points you will score each time you can toss the ball into the laundry basket. Also decide on the winning number.

  1. You might start with 2's for the first round, with a winning number of 20. Once someone reaches that, start over by counting by 5's for each ball in the basket, with 50 as the goal. For the third and final round, count by 10's and the first one to 100 wins.

  1. To play, stand behind the line and throw the ball. You get points every time the ball goes in. If you miss, then it's the next person's turn.

  1. Everyone should keep score.

  1. If you finish the three rounds and want to keep playing, try making the rule that the ball has to BOUNCE once before it goes in, or turn the laundry basket on its side, and roll the ball in to score.

What other ways can you invent to play?
